This week's session features two speakers, Sidney Abou Sawan and Eric Williamson, on the topic of Protein Metabolism

Session 1: mTOR and the usual suspects: how resistance training affects our muscle’s ability to use dietary amino acids

Learning objectives:

- Be able to identify how mTOR is ‘trafficked’ in human skeletal muscle when we eat protein or exercise.

-Understand how resistance training changes the subcellular location of mTOR and how this affects our muscle's ability to use dietary amino acids.

- Distinguish the pros and cons of using ‘labelled foods’ (e.g. intrinsically labelled foods vs crystalline amino acids) to assess protein metabolism.

Sidney is pursuing his PhD in the Iovate/Muscletech Metabolism & Sports Science Lab at the University of Toronto. Under the supervision of Dr. Daniel Moore, he is interested in advancing our knowledge toward the mechanisms governing skeletal muscle growth in response to resistance exercise. To achieve this aim, he is interested in combining kinetic measures of muscle protein synthesis (e.g. stable isotopes) with molecular markers of anabolic signaling (e.g. changes in protein subcellular location or protein expression).

Session 2: Making more from less: how “exercise snacks” help dietary protein make new muscle

Learning Objectives:

- Gain an understanding of how dietary protein is used to make new muscle.

- Identify how breaking up prolonged periods of sitting with short exercise breaks allows our muscles to use dietary protein ‘better’.

- Know how "exercise snacks" link to muscle remodeling and adequate muscle mass/quality over time.

Eric Williamson is a registered dietitian and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. within the area of exercise nutrition and metabolism. He studies under Dr. Daniel Moore at the University of Toronto where their primary interest is in muscle protein metabolism. Eric has a wide variety of interests in the area of exercise nutrition research and enjoys putting what he learns into practice when working as a dietitian with both athletes and recreational exercisers.
